Opening in 1981, Novello meaning "new and fresh" in Italian, started out as a contract furniture company with the philosophy of making life simple and creating furniture packages that make it easier to adjust to your new home experience. Novello Furniture was opened in 1981 by Edward Polli, a second-generation furniture retailer originally from Bradford, Vermont. Ed grew up working from the bottom up at A.E. Hale Furniture Company, which was owned by his father, Vincent. The name Novello was coined by Ed's maternal grandmother, Lucia Leani, of northern Italian decent.
